A tablet is one of the best ways to video call family, read with big print and look at photos. But the choices can feel confusing, and 2026 brought big changes. Apple raised its prices in June, and Amazon replaced its Fire tablets with a new line. This guide sorts it out in plain words.
Which tablet should I buy?
Here is how the main choices compare. These are US starting prices for Wi-Fi models, checked 29 Oct 2026. Prices change often, so check the official page before you buy.
| Tablet | Best for | Screen | Starting US price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple iPad (A16) | Most people, especially iPhone users | 11 inches | US$449 |
| Apple iPad mini (A20 Pro) | Small hands, reading in bed | 8.5 inches | US$699 |
| Apple iPad Air (M4) | A bigger 13-inch iPad | 11 or 13 inches | US$749 (11-inch), US$949 (13-inch) |
| Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+ | Lower cost, Android phone users | 11 inches | US$299.99 |
| Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE | Brighter screen, pen included | 10.9 inches | US$549.99 |
| Amazon Alexa Tablet 11 | Alexa and Prime households | 11 inches | See Amazon for today’s price (with ads) |
| Amazon Fire HD 10 (2023) | Tightest budget, while stock lasts | 10.1 inches | Being phased out (with ads) |
| GrandPad | First-time users, family-managed | 8 inches | Check GrandPad’s price, plus a monthly plan |
Plain talk
For most people, an 11-inch screen is the sweet spot. It is big enough for large text and video calls, but still light enough to hold.
Why is the iPad our top pick for seniors?
The Apple iPad (A16) starts at US$449 for 128GB. Apple raised iPad prices in June 2026. It has an 11-inch screen and a 12MP front camera that sits on the long edge. So when the iPad is turned sideways in a stand, you look straight at the person you’re calling. See it on Amazon (opens in a new tab)
Three things make it a strong choice for older adults:
- FaceTime is built in. If family members use iPhones, calling them takes two taps.
- No ads. Nothing pops up on the lock screen.
- Assistive Access. This is a simple mode that shows only the apps you pick, as big buttons. Apple says Calls, Camera, Messages, Magnifier, Music, Photos and Apple TV are designed for it.
You set it up in Settings > Accessibility > Assistive Access. You choose the apps, then pick Rows (an easy list) or Grid (bigger pictures). A separate passcode keeps your loved one from leaving the simple mode by mistake.
Safety tip
Write the Assistive Access passcode down and keep it somewhere safe. Apple warns that if you forget it and haven’t set up a recovery Apple Account, you may have to reset the iPad.
Apple doesn’t publish a set number of update years. But the current iPad runs iPadOS 27, the newest version, and older iPads have usually had many years of updates. For a full side-by-side of every model, see our guide to the best iPad for seniors.
What changed with the iPad mini and iPad Air?
The iPad mini was replaced this week. The new model has a bigger 8.5-inch OLED screen and an A20 Pro chip. It starts at US$699, up from $599 for the old model. Pre-orders opened October 28, and it reaches stores on November 6. It’s light and handy, but the screen is small for anyone with low vision.
The iPad Air (M4) starts at US$749 for the 11-inch size. The 13-inch model starts at US$949. It is the cheapest way to get a 13-inch iPad.
Is a Samsung Galaxy Tab a good choice?
Yes, especially if your loved one already has an Android phone. Samsung tablets use the Google Play Store, so apps like Google Meet, WhatsApp and Zoom are easy to add.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+ starts at US$299.99 for 128GB. It has an 11-inch screen, and Samsung promises seven years of updates. That’s a lot of tablet for the money. See it on Amazon (opens in a new tab)
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE starts at US$549.99. It has a 10.9-inch screen and comes with an S Pen in the box. A pen can help if fingers are shaky or tapping feels hard. It also gets seven years of software support. See it on Amazon (opens in a new tab)
Samsung’s version of a simple mode is called Easy mode. Samsung’s US help page lists it under Settings > Display > Easy mode. It makes text and buttons bigger and bolder. You can also raise the text size under Settings > Display > Font size and style.
Plain talk
Samsung’s Easy mode was made for phones first. It helps, but it isn’t as locked-down as the iPad’s Assistive Access. If you want only three or four big buttons, the iPad does that better.
What happened to Amazon Fire tablets?
In October 2026, Amazon launched a new line called Alexa Tablets. They run regular Android with the Google Play Store, instead of Amazon’s own Fire OS. Amazon calls them “a new product line,” not an update for Fire tablets. They started shipping in the US on October 14.
The Amazon Alexa Tablet 11 has an 11-inch screen and an 8MP front camera. There’s also an Alexa Tablet 8 (8.7-inch) and an Alexa Tablet 12 Pro (12-inch). The new Alexa+ assistant is built in, so your loved one can ask questions out loud. See it on Amazon (opens in a new tab)
About the ads. The Alexa Tablet 8 and 11 show ads on the lock screen. AFTVnews reports you can pay extra to buy them without ads. The 12 Pro has no lock screen ads. Amazon also hasn’t said how many years of updates the Alexa Tablets will get.
Should I still buy a Fire HD 10?
Only if the budget is very tight. The 2023 Fire HD 10 has a 10.1-inch screen. It shows lock screen ads, and Amazon is phasing out the Fire line, so stock may run out. The bigger Fire Max 11 has already been quietly discontinued in the US.
The good news is that existing Fire tablets keep working. Amazon lists security updates for the 2023 Fire HD 10 until at least December 31, 2029.
Try this
On a Fire HD 10, swipe down from the top and turn on Show Mode, or say “Alexa, switch to Show Mode.” The tablet becomes a big-text Alexa screen you can use from across the room. Amazon says the Fire Max 11 doesn’t support it.
Is there a tablet made just for seniors?
Yes. GrandPad is an 8-inch tablet built for people aged 75 and over. It has big buttons, simple video calls with approved family members, and a family member can manage it from their own phone. There’s no open web or app store to get lost in.
The catch is cost. Every GrandPad needs a monthly plan. Consumer Cellular sells it with a monthly service plan. Check the current price on GrandPad’s site. Other sellers price it differently, so add up a full year’s cost before you buy.
Plain talk
GrandPad is a great fit for someone who has never used a computer. For anyone who might want to browse, read books or play games later, an iPad with Assistive Access grows with them for less money over time.
What if they need a bigger screen?
If eyesight is the main worry, a larger screen helps a lot. Here are the biggest options:
- iPad Air 13-inch (M4): US$949. The same easy iPad features, on a much larger screen.
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE+: a 13.1-inch screen. Check the current price on Samsung’s site.
- Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro: a 12-inch screen, with no lock screen ads.
Keep weight in mind. A 13-inch tablet is hard to hold up for a long video call. A stand or a case that folds into a stand makes a big difference.
How do I make a tablet easier to use?
The right settings matter as much as the right tablet. If you choose an iPad, start with our step-by-step guide to make an iPad easier for seniors. It covers bigger text, bold type and turning off distractions.
A few more guides can help:
- Lock an iPad to one app with Guided Access is handy if your parent only needs one thing, like FaceTime or a photo slideshow.
- Read books on an iPad in large print shows you how to make e-books easy on the eyes.
- How to FaceTime on an iPad walks you through the first video call.
If you’d like everything in one place, our book Your iPad, Plainly Explained covers setup, large text, FaceTime and staying safe online, in large print.
Safety tip
Whatever tablet you choose, set a passcode and turn on automatic updates. Updates fix security holes that scammers use.
A note for UK and Australian readers
Models and prices differ outside the US. The iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab are sold in both countries, so check Apple’s and Samsung’s local websites. Amazon says the Alexa Tablets ship in the UK from 19 October 2026. We couldn’t confirm an Australian release, and the GrandPad prices above are US plans.
